Caution: Soul Mate Ahead – Book and Concept Review

Any examination of the concept of ‘soul mates’ must surely include a very important book entitled Caution Soul Mate Ahead! by Janet Cunningham, PhD, and Michael Ranucci. While most of the world’s spiritual believers are searching for or yearning for that one special someone they consider as their soul mate, that journey often fails to recognize the true nature of soul mates. In fact, the title of Dr. Cunningham’s book introduces a critical warning about soul mates: “Caution…”.

There are more than 18 million references to soul mates on the internet, including more than one million individual pages, posts and articles. Within these discussions, different terms are assigned for soul mates, such as teacher soul mates, romantic soul mates, twin flames, essence twins, companion soul mates, task companions, sharing soul mates, constant soul mates, karmic soul mates, and so forth. Many of these are shades of the same generic type, helping us to categorize some of the more subtle variations among souls.

For the purposes of this article, we will examine the four general types or categories of soul mates identified by Cunningham and Ranucci in their book and which exemplify the use of the term “Caution” in the title of this important book. Here are the four categories: Read More…

Take Responsibility for Your Energy

On the last Oprah Winfrey Show, Oprah talked about a sign which she kept in her makeup room, upon which was written: “Please take responsibility for the energy that you bring into this space.” The moment I heard this truly profound statement, I recognized its importance to every interaction in life, and I knew I had share it on The Soul Channel.

Oprah received the sign from one of her guests by the name of Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor, who was on the show talking about her book My Stroke of Insight: A Brain Scientist’s Personal Journey. The Oprah website also provides an excellent excerpt from the book, which demonstrates the exceptional quality, detail and accessibility of Dr. Taylor’s writing.

I was especially pleased to read what Oprah learned from her discussions with Dr. Taylor, including:

“Nobody but you is responsible for your life. It doesn’t matter what your mama did; it doesn’t matter what your daddy didn’t do. You are responsible for your life. … You are responsible for the energy that you create for yourself, and you’re responsible for the energy that you bring to others.”

As discussed in other Soul Channel articles, learning does not take place except through change. What changed in Oprah’s life from this experience? She explained:

“I ask the same thing in my home and at my companies. Thank you, Dr. Taylor, for that simple but powerful lesson. All life is energy and we are transmitting it at every moment. We are all little beaming little signals like radio frequencies, and the world is responding in kind.” How quickly an excellent student of life becomes an exceptional teacher.

The preceding discussion provides an intriguing background for this article. Yet what I really want to chat about is the infinite depth of the word ‘space’ in the quote, “Please take responsibility for the energy that you bring into this space.” It is easy to imagine that ‘space’ refers to the room or building you just entered. Ever walk into a room where a heated argument has been taking place and you actually feel the angry energy still present? Have you ever experienced the contagious energy of laughter? Read More…

Book Review — “Heaven is for Real”

While walking through the grocery store this past weekend, I ran across a fairly new book entitled Heaven is for Real for Kids: A Little Boy’s Astounding Story of His Trip to Heaven and Back. It was published in 2010 and became #1 on the NY Times best seller list in March 2011, with more than 1.5 million copies sold to date. What caught my attention was that the book is about a boy named Colton who had a near death experience when he was not quite four years old. Over the next year or so, Colton periodically and spontaneously related intriguing bits of information about his experience in “Heaven”, including meeting his great grandfather (who died before Colton was born), his miscarried sister (who no one had told him about), angels, Gabriel, Jesus, Mary and even God.

I am an avid fan of books which discuss near death experiences, life-between-lives, and the struggle to be born into a physical life. I especially appreciate when such events are related by small children, as I consider that such children typically apply very little filtering (personal bias) in terms of the information received — aside from being a child observer with limited understanding and a limited vocabulary. Very young children still have memories of their spiritual existence before physical life began, and many continue to communicate with “spirit friends” until age five or even later.

Such is the case with Colton Burpo. I see this young boy as an honest conveyor of what he experienced, observed and was told while visiting the Soul Side. This is a very important perspective, for any such information which is considered to be credible must be balanced against my own spiritual beliefs. In some cases, this can lead to a transcending spiritual experience that can shake, and perhaps subsequently strengthen, the foundation of personal faith, just as it shook the bedrock of faith for Colton’s father and mother.

The events which unfold in the book are related by Colton’s father, Todd Burpo, who is the pastor at Crossroads Wesleyan Church in the small farming town of Imperial, Nebraska, USA. The town of Imperial and parishioners from other small regional towns play an important role in Colton’s experience and somewhat miraculous recovery. Their generosity and prayer remind us that there is no such thing as spiritual coincidence; everything happens for a reason, and so most blessings happen in response to personal and community requests through prayer.
