The posts appearing below provides information and discussion on spirituality in general, including posts on faith. Given that The Soul Channel is non-denominational, religious considerations are periodically included in various posts, but only from a clinical (non-promotional) or example perspective.

What is the Soul

I searched Google for the word ‘soul’ and received 1.2 billion hits. Of course, these covered everything from spirituality to rock groups and even The Soul Channel. The first soul hit on Google (as good a place to start as any) was for Wikipedia, which defines the soul as “the incorporeal essence of a person, living thing or object.”

Following this thread a bit further, Wikipedia reports that “incorporeal or uncarnate [discarnate] means without the nature of a body or substance. The idea of incorporeality refers to the notion that there is an incorporeal realm of existence, or “place”, that is distinct from the corporeal or material universe.” Frankly, it all sounds rather complex and disserving of something easier to grasp. I am comfortable with the fundamentals of the Wikipedia definitions, so perhaps we can use them to develop something reasonably simple.  Read More…

Spiritual or Physical Life Experience

Humans frequently contemplate whether they have a soul. This question typically arises when they encounter an experience which has a spiritual connection, such as an insightful event or discussion. I love such moments, for they have the potential of becoming transcending moments in our lives – moments which permanently alter our way of thinking, provide us with a new perspective, and somehow alter our path in life in some clearly definable way. Of all experiential moments in life, the transcending moments are the most delicious and the most important. In fact, the sum total of all physical life experiences contains relatively few transcending moments which makes them all the more precious to contemplate. Read More…

No Coincidences in Life

People often suggest that a given event happened coincidentally, which is to say that it did not happen as a result of any planned or natural occurrence. Let’s consider this for a moment.

Anything which happens to any individual or species is by definition ‘experiential’, which means that it is either coincidental or in accordance with some defined rule, law or plan. Let’s first examine the validity of ‘coincidence’. Read More…

Take Responsibility for Your Energy

On the last Oprah Winfrey Show, Oprah talked about a sign which she kept in her makeup room, upon which was written: “Please take responsibility for the energy that you bring into this space.” The moment I heard this truly profound statement, I recognized its importance to every interaction in life, and I knew I had share it on The Soul Channel.

Oprah received the sign from one of her guests by the name of Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor, who was on the show talking about her book My Stroke of Insight: A Brain Scientist’s Personal Journey. The Oprah website also provides an excellent excerpt from the book, which demonstrates the exceptional quality, detail and accessibility of Dr. Taylor’s writing.

I was especially pleased to read what Oprah learned from her discussions with Dr. Taylor, including:

“Nobody but you is responsible for your life. It doesn’t matter what your mama did; it doesn’t matter what your daddy didn’t do. You are responsible for your life. … You are responsible for the energy that you create for yourself, and you’re responsible for the energy that you bring to others.”

As discussed in other Soul Channel articles, learning does not take place except through change. What changed in Oprah’s life from this experience? She explained:

“I ask the same thing in my home and at my companies. Thank you, Dr. Taylor, for that simple but powerful lesson. All life is energy and we are transmitting it at every moment. We are all little beaming little signals like radio frequencies, and the world is responding in kind.” How quickly an excellent student of life becomes an exceptional teacher.

The preceding discussion provides an intriguing background for this article. Yet what I really want to chat about is the infinite depth of the word ‘space’ in the quote, “Please take responsibility for the energy that you bring into this space.” It is easy to imagine that ‘space’ refers to the room or building you just entered. Ever walk into a room where a heated argument has been taking place and you actually feel the angry energy still present? Have you ever experienced the contagious energy of laughter? Read More…

Channeling 2011/11/04 — How Can Spiritual Divinity be ‘Always Available’

Introductory Remarks

One of the most important aspects of The Soul Channel is the opportunity to share channeled sessions. This might also be considered as a meditation session, as meditation is certainly involved as part of the process of clearing the mind so as to be open to the channeled communications. For my channeling/meditation sessions, I find it easiest to use automatic writing on a computer, which is discussed extensively in a previous two-part Automatic Writing article/post.

In this specific session, I am seeking to understand how spiritual divinity (God, Allah, Jesus, St. Michael, etc.) are ‘always available’ to communicate and respond to questions and prayer. I decided to pose this question directly to the Creator. (Why not?)

For this two-way (ask and receive) channeling session, all items in italics are questions or comments by the author; all other information is channeled. The date shown below is the actual date the session took place; not the posting date.

For this session, I would be grateful to communicate directly with God. Is this allowed, and can we do this within a flexible, multi-session discussion.

Of course, John. It would be valuable for people to understand that I am ALWAYS available, just as I am ALWAYS with and within every person. Similarly, the mechanism or approach to communication is not so important; what is important is the effort made to communicate and the openness for discussion.

Which leads to my primary question and the foundation of this discussion. If we recognize that there are many tens of billions of galaxies within the known universe, billions of star systems within those galaxies, billions of planets within those star systems, and according to Carl Sagan, “the total number of stars in the universe is greater than all the grains of sand on all the beaches of the planet Earth.” How can You be everywhere at once, and how are You able to find time to communicate with even a single being once in a lifetime, let alone being “ALWAYS available”? Book Review — “Heaven is for Real”

While walking through the grocery store this past weekend, I ran across a fairly new book entitled Heaven is for Real for Kids: A Little Boy’s Astounding Story of His Trip to Heaven and Back. It was published in 2010 and became #1 on the NY Times best seller list in March 2011, with more than 1.5 million copies sold to date. What caught my attention was that the book is about a boy named Colton who had a near death experience when he was not quite four years old. Over the next year or so, Colton periodically and spontaneously related intriguing bits of information about his experience in “Heaven”, including meeting his great grandfather (who died before Colton was born), his miscarried sister (who no one had told him about), angels, Gabriel, Jesus, Mary and even God.

I am an avid fan of books which discuss near death experiences, life-between-lives, and the struggle to be born into a physical life. I especially appreciate when such events are related by small children, as I consider that such children typically apply very little filtering (personal bias) in terms of the information received — aside from being a child observer with limited understanding and a limited vocabulary. Very young children still have memories of their spiritual existence before physical life began, and many continue to communicate with “spirit friends” until age five or even later.

Such is the case with Colton Burpo. I see this young boy as an honest conveyor of what he experienced, observed and was told while visiting the Soul Side. This is a very important perspective, for any such information which is considered to be credible must be balanced against my own spiritual beliefs. In some cases, this can lead to a transcending spiritual experience that can shake, and perhaps subsequently strengthen, the foundation of personal faith, just as it shook the bedrock of faith for Colton’s father and mother.

The events which unfold in the book are related by Colton’s father, Todd Burpo, who is the pastor at Crossroads Wesleyan Church in the small farming town of Imperial, Nebraska, USA. The town of Imperial and parishioners from other small regional towns play an important role in Colton’s experience and somewhat miraculous recovery. Their generosity and prayer remind us that there is no such thing as spiritual coincidence; everything happens for a reason, and so most blessings happen in response to personal and community requests through prayer. The Soul

What is the Soul

Most religions recognize the existence of the soul. But what is the soul? Although this is examined widely in the literature, one of my favorite resource on this question is the book entitled 50 Big Ideas, by Ben Dupre. What makes this book especially intriguing is that the author captures discussions on this question from great thinkers across the past 2,400 years. Some of these extracts from Dupre’s book are synthesized below, with each of them prevalent today in various spiritual and religious discussions around the world:

  • Plato argued that souls are immortal and transcendent. “The soul is immortal and capable of enduring all extremes of good and evil.” In sharp contrast, Aristotle maintained that the notion of a soul separate from a physical body is simply nonsense. (2,400 B.C.E) Read More…
